There were some really lovely tender moments and lots of character growth. Some great plot twists too, but it still falls so short. I wanted more of the things that made this good, but those were the parts the author cut out on.

I don't know what else to say except that this book broke me and my bookmark. It broke me in a good way. My bookmark, however, won't recover. It was an amazing read.

would you look at that! i've read all three books! so don't yell at me that the series "gets better" if i "push through the first book".

it does not get better. it does get interesting, in the same morbid sense that makes forensic sciences interesting. which is to say it does not get good-interesting.

not even getting into all the problematic shit, i have a bone to pick with the plot. where's all the political intrigue from the previous book? the entire ending was pure, stupid luck. nothing planned. nothing orchestrated. just pure, stupid luck.

look, if i have to read laurent and damen pretend the events of first book are forgivable, the least i ask is a good plot to engage with. not... whatever this is.

oh, and the so-called "abolition of all slavery" that everyone praises? doesn't even happen onscreen. it's literary one line of dialogue, almost like an afterthought.

so much for the series' anti-slavery stance, right? Pacat, your colours are showing.

it's a fast read, though. i'll give you that.
