Really interesting look at his career in particularly his relationship with Savile which takes up a lot of the book. If you’re a fan of his television programmes then you’ll enjoy it. Would’ve like to have read more about the Most Hated Family in America.

Listened to on Audible.

I love Louis. I love his honesty, the things he chooses to research & his general attitude; I’ve watched the vast majority of his documentaries so reading/listening to his book was something I just had to do. A lot of people will pick this book up for the Saville details, & although those parts were enlightening & interesting, that wasn’t my reason for listening. I wanted to know how Louis really felt about working with the variety of people he does, from nazis to porn stars, how the ideas came about & what went on when the cameras were off - I was not disappointed.

⚠️ Discussions of sex, drug use, Nazi views, bigotry, discrimination, sexual abuse/rape & all of the other tricky subjects Louis tackles in his documentaries ⚠️

Extended Review to follow.

I engaged with this book as an audiobook, which was voiced by the author. It was probably the best way to read it, and I enjoyed the storytelling. However, the fact that it was very squarely about the pandemic meant it was at once informative, strangely nostalgic, and a bit re-traumatising, given that we all lived through all the stuff being discussed. Still, it was a compelling read and will probably be a great resource for future generations when looking back at the pandemic as a historic event.

4.5 stars - but I'm biased because I love Louis.

I love Louis Theroux but at times this book didn't quite hit the mark for me. It was an excellent review of his career but I feel it did focus a little too singularly on his involvement with Jimmy Saville, and I would have liked a more well-rounded examination of some of his other documentaries. I strongly recommend listening to the audiobook as his narration is excellent.

I love Louis’ documentaries so was really looking forward to this book but unfortunately it just didn’t quite do it for me. There were definitely a few interesting chapters and some funny jokes and quips but overall I found the book a little boring.
