“italians have a little joke, that the world is so hard, that a man must have two fathers to look after him, and that's why they have godfathers.”

would have been a 5 stars up until 70%. then for some reason, i sort of lost interest in the plot. there was a little moment of ennui where things stopped moving as fast as they had been. it picked up again right at the end, at the last remaining 50 pages or so. for that, i give it a 4 stars.

The Godfather was impressive, a tale of family and honour and tradition and blood and brutality.

“never hate your enemies. it affects your judgment.”

7 outta 10. Rounding up.

Listened to this on Audible. Narration was spot on.

The racism and misogyny are cringeworthy, but part of the story I guess (1940’s Sicilian mafia). The “big box” and similar nonsense… blech. But overall it’s a solid story.

If I could give this book a 6th star, I would.  It is incredible. SO much better than the movie (and I LOVE the movie). Couldn't put it down.

The afterward by Robert J. Thompson says it all, it is nostalgic and well written with surprising complexity. A great read if you enjoyed the first two Godfather movies.
