Another satisfying book in this series. Fiona sees links between cases that are not clear to her superiors, but she perseveres and is proved right (of course). But she is not doing very well psychologically, and being subjected to torture by the bad guys does not help. She is able to escape their clutches through a combination of luck and ingenuity, but I was surprised that they didn't come after her again, considering that they know all about her and where she works. (And I do wish that authors would stop subjecting their female protagonists to extreme physical violence.) The other dramatic set piece takes place on a ship in a storm in the North Sea, and I was holding on to the book for dear life, especially once the bad guys boarded and the wind picked up. So good!

4.5/5 stars. While I still don't know how someone with DC Fiona Griffiths' history of mental illness ever managed to become a police officer, I am glad she did. This is as excellent addition to the series, and I can't wait for more! Highly recommended!

My 4th Fiona Griffiths in a row....I love that each case builds on the last, challenging my memory sometimes, but certainly assuming a level of reader intelligence. I am way past any suspending reality stuff, abductions, rock climbing, the high seas...all good!

So this is not a perfect book at all— towards the end of the book there were some plot points which were really too much. Still, I liked it. I liked the main character with Cotard’s Syndrome. (Thankfully, not an alcoholic.) In short, it scratched my mystery itch enough to overlook the plot issues.

Still sharp

Sharply written, with complex plots and a great nutjob central character, there has been no drop off in quality in this series. Recommended.

This entry in the series really struggles to balance Fiona Griffiths' weird peculiarities and struggles with the fact that she works for the police. I think Bingham went way to far in having her act out on the job, there was no way she would have gotten away with going on the boat, she really should have been fired. The mystery in this entry just seems to advance a larger narrative of the series, it isn't that tight and interesting on its own. Not the best in the series.
