I can see myself really loving this on a reread, and I think the same is probably true of much of the series. While I was reading, the tone and focus of the book seemed to shift dramatically a couple of times – never irrecoverably, but some of the twists and turns came almost too out of the blue. (This is a series that really loves hiding information from the reader.) The final third, though, was incredibly satisfying, and I'm looking forward to seeing where the series goes next.
Graphic: Torture
Moderate: Death

If Megan Whalen Turner can make a lot of walking entertaining in The Thief, she can make me interested in the political intrigue surrounding these nonexistent countries. My only complaint is how much we don't see of Eugenides's recovery, though what is portrayed on the page does a fine job capturing the potency of his grief and trauma (which I totally didn't remember from when I first read this book years ago as a teen).
Graphic: Blood, Violence, Medical trauma, and Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Alcohol, Grief, Death, and Death of parent
Minor: Slavery
