That was supremely weird and extremely confusing. The book was mostly running on vibes ? Which I enjoyed but also it could’ve been really cool if I’d gotten some more information about the world. But also it was fun to have to figure it out with almost zero exposition. I don’t know I had a good time overall

*I received this book for free at the Gen Con writers symposium, but not for the purpose of reviewing it*
A very interesting first book in a series. It's a book that dumps you into the story with very little explanation or background information but does a good job of revealing what the reader needs to know as it goes along.
The lore and mythology were interesting. The power of the border keeper was staggering and it was fun to see a female presenting (though the character/creature that she is might be genderless as it is revealed that they've been many other "people" before) wield such power with no apology or qualms.
There is some light body horror in the book which was a surprise. Those moments just helped highlight how "other" and how dangerous the realms they were in actually were.
This book was mostly nonstop action and information. I still feel overwhelmed by the story now having been finished with it for a few weeks.
I think I WILL seek out the follow-up books, but I am in no hurry. I can't fully put my finger on why, but it's a book that left me feeling very middle ground. I didn't love it, but I definitely didn't hate it. It was okay. I liked it.

Unlike any book I've ever read! Incredibly magical and a fun ride, with lots of twists and turns!

Mysterious, also hard to figure out what is going on. Shades of greek descent into the underworld stories.

Very dark fantasy with intricatelydescribed worlds, my favourite part of the book.
