A decent start to the series with some interesting vampire lore, and a polyship that isn't terrified to touch each other.

3.5 - liked it a lot

This book tells the story of Shara Isador, orphan who is constantly on the run from monsters that are trying to murder her. On one particular ambush incident from said monsters, two men come to her rescue. They claim that she is 1) a vampire, 2) a vampire queen, and 3) her they are her Blood, her loyal servants forever, if she'll have them.

She was unaware of all the above, especially that she was a vampire, but when she sees one of them bleeding, she is drawn to his blood. And then he encourages her to feed from it, because Blood and Queen feed on each other's blood back and forth to garner power individually. And Shara is powerful: she's the last in the line of Isador, vampire queens descended from the goddess Isis. Though she has her Blood now, the power draws even more danger to her.

This was a fun book to read. I've never read a book with blood play, and this book had a TON of it. I also feel like the whole vampire queen, Blood guard is really original; I haven't read anything like that before, with the getting power from mutual feeding, etc. I like the reverse harem aspect of it, how Shara's Blood are totally devoted to her, and how she calls the shots. The devotion is just like...mind-blowing, I guess, and her being in charge is nice to have since normally it feels like male characters get to do it.

The only things I wish were different were 1) for Shara to have a much cooler name and 2) for the author to just have taken the story a little slower and expounded more on things. The whole book spans a total of like 3 days, and it could certainly have taken more time.

Again, I'm super curious about the world the author's built, and look forward to seeing what else goes on in the next in the series.

A bit of plot to go with with hot, bloody vampire harem sex. Surprisingly not terrible.
