Honestly, I've never loved a 5th book in a series before this one. The absolute SETUPS in all of the previous stories. It keeps making rules and subverting them in the coolest ways. This one had a few different genres wrapped in it. It was a heist, a horror, absurdism(?),  a drama, and a tavern one shot all in one. It was just a GOOD TIME. the best thing about this is that Matt makes us love his characters and they feel like real people. With the hope through all of these books it remains a great time. I can only hope for the future of this series. It will be the litrpg fiction definer like The Hunger Games did for ya dystopia. And it is so worthy.

This is so far the 5th book in the series and the story is gradually taking a darker turn. I mean, it was already pretty gruesome to begin with, but I feel since the 4th book there has been a tone shift. The dark, messed up humor is still there, but I felt it has been pushed ever so slightly to the background as we are focusing more and more on Carl’s and Donut’s psyche and what this whole forced dungeon crawl is doing to them.

And that ending just simply broke my heart. 💔

This was not what I expected when I picked up this series for the first time, but I can’t say I’m not enjoying where it’s headed, as grim as that place will be.

I just wish these books would include some sort of recap from the previous books. The cast has grown quite large at this point and picking this series up after a one year hiatus left me asking “Who dat?” more often than I care to admit. It always took me a while to get to the “aha!” moment and reading through a recap would solve this quite easily.

In any case, DCC doesn’t disappoint. Really hyped for the next book, whenever that may be released! And if you like action, dark humor and litrpgs, do yourself a favor and go pick up this series already!
