I knew eventually this series would go from silly absurdity to making me feel things, but ow, it still hurts ☹️🙂☹️🙂☹️

Another great installation. I like how the story is really expanding beyond the dungeon now and we’re getting more into the bigger picture of what’s happening. The humor has died down a bit, it’s still present, but things are getting more serious and heavy as we get deeper into the reality of what’s going on and what Carl is working towards. Really excited to continue

You're laughing? I'm crying about the human condition and our genetic need to bond and take care of each other (including animals), and collective action against authoritarian systems and you're laughing???

Though I complained to everyone I know about just how LONG this book is, I wouldn't change or cut anything from the story. Everything in and out of the story is necessary and builds and builds until The Butcher's Masquerade when we get what we're promised. Pain, tears, hope, and pain again.

Where the last two books separated the Crawlers out, everyone felt close by and a huge team for this one (which is what I'm here for!).  Dungeon Crawler Carl is truly an iconic series, and this may be the best of the bunch yet.  Also, if you have a little kitty cat of your own- don't read this when she's not in arms reach of you for immediate comfort and assurance.

Last book I gave Matt two challenges, let's see how he did:

  1. Have characters outside the human gender binary
    1. FAIL. There is a brief mention of a race with a "third gender", but they weren't described at length and didn't seem to be treated well. Technically there is a genderfluid god, but it's more like god shenanigans then an actual identity.
  2. Go one book without talking about sex workers or prostitute
    1. PASS! I'm not counting preestablished Juice Box, and I don't even think they refer to her as a prostitute in the book. There's talks of whores, and of course the sex doll. But I don't think there was any prostitution at all. More sex then normal though! Interesting change.

50/50- I'm surprised that the second goal was reached first.  Come on Matt, you're telling me EVERYONE IN THE UNIVERSE IS A CISGENDERED MAN OR WOMAN??? GIVE ME A BREAK. I will be checking back in for book 6.

"I tumbled like a sack of doorknobs"

“I’d just gotten a cat,” Dmitri added sadly. “His name was Kapitan Whiskers, and he was orange. I got him the day before... before it happened.”

“I felt a grin spread across my face as I took everyone in. This is it, I thought. This is my family now.“

"The day I take a bribe from some pig-faced imperialist fuck is the day I wither.”

"If you gain a little bit of power, they take it away."

It just keeps getting better

We are 5 books in and it just keeps getting better! When I read book 1, I thought this series was going to be a bit of ridiculous, light hearted fun. And while the ridiculous and crude hasn't changed, it certainly isn't light hearted. Friends are being made and then lost, Carl and Donut are trying to not lose themselves to the horrors involved in the crawl. Everyone has their own endgame whether they are in the crawl, watching it or running it. I'm really looking forward to where this is going, but also a bit scared as I know we have more to lose.
