This book was a sweet lovely almost fairytale. The setting was handled with sensitivity and maturity. The message this book contains remains important. It is meant for children and framed in a way that they can understand. Nevertheless, I wish at times the author would've probed deeper and with more intensity into the historical setting. In my eyes, the book's faults are that it is intended for children and so remains lighter and less detailed than I could wish.

This is an incredible book. I do not know how more people aren’t aware of it. It broached the subject of the atrocities of WWII in a lyrical and truthful way. The magic and fantasy elements of the story did not lessen or diminish the brutality of the war and the heartbreak of the Jewish community of Poland. Truly a wonderful book.

A doll fairy tale transposed over the Holocaust, for middle grade readers. Perhaps good learning about history, though I fear it is repeating itself in our current times which made it even more sad.
