Saur boring, it's like reading a Wikipedia article. The time period is interesting, and while I appreciate the historical facts, there's very little characterization, and the writing is lackluster.

I enjoyed this book, as it follows historical events that interest me, the Spanish Civil War and the events of Chilean history during the twentieth century. As usual, Isabel Allende’s characters are unique and appealing, and always individuals in their own right. Pablo Neruda makes an appearance, as well as a brief appearance by the Truebas from The House of the Spirits. Keep your eyes open for that one!
Except for one section where Allende uses straight history, the characters and the plot move forward in a way that keeps you turning the pages. I loved the combination of history and storytelling, and the unexpected twists.

I am not a fan of anything remotely in the “romance” genre. I wouldn’t necessarily call this a romance… But definitely a historical novel. Learned a few things that I didn’t know. All in all not a phenomenal read but a good read

Aprendí mucho y me encantó.

Meh. Parts were great. MOST of it was dry dry dry. It was ok. I learned some. Not one I'd recommend, but it was OK.

3.5. It was the writing style that held me back. Felt like a non-fiction book the way it was written. I felt like I was not able to get close enough to the characters.

One of the best books that I’ve read in a long time! I read it in Feb of 2020. If you are the fan of historical fiction, read this now! This books tells the beautiful story of people/a couple from the basque region of Spain at the start of WWII who move to South America. The story ends in present day. It is a complete tale with great character development! I felt a wide range of emotions along side the characters. My heart was satisfied but sad when I was done reading.
