I'm never going to finish this book and I may as well admit it. Reading it makes me exhausted because I'm constantly being battered by the sexism and misogyny and white male privilege and it's never even questioned by the author, who apparently thinks that women are strong enough to take this kind of abuse, both by weak and cowardly individual men and the society they live in, and that makes it acceptable. I just want to jump into the story and shout, "Run, Hester Prynne! Run, far, far away! Get on the next ship and go someplace else to have your baby and raise it! Lie and say you're a widow; they won't know!! Take some care of yourself!" But I can't do that and I am done with trying to read this book. It makes me hate the world.

I REALLY wanted to like this book a lot. The story in itself was good; I loved the social commentary of Puritanism and its control of people (especially women) in the 17th century. However, there was just no getting past how dull the majority of the writing was. The story could have been far shorter but it was padded out with seemingly meaningless descriptions that added very little to the actual narrative. It’s a shame, I could’ve really got behind this book but I guess it’s just not for me.
