A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

I'd seen numerous film adaptations of this story but, surprisingly, never read the book they were all based upon. So this Christmas, I decided it was about time that I remedied that. And honestly? I don't know why it took me so long. It's such a short book that it could easily be read in one sitting. The characters are engaging, the writing, the story flows effortlessly. Dickens' descriptive language is wonderfully used in this story (just try reading his description of Christmas dinner without feeling hungry. It's practically impossible) and the ending, quite rightly, leaves you with a big smile upon your face and a warmth in your heart.

I had never read A Christmas Carol and listened to the fabulous recording of it by Jim Dale (he also reads Harry Potter). High recommend.

I’m not a huge fan of the “classics” but I did enjoy this one. I don’t know if it’s because it’s such a famous and timeless story, or if Hugh Grant as the narrator is what convinced me, but it has persuaded me to try more stories by Dickens.

Fairly sure I would not have stuck with this were it not for me getting the audiobook. Only real problem was that Scrooge sounded too much like Nigel Thornberry for me and I was having a bit of difficulty taking him seriously, but Tim Curry's voice acting was incredible, and it was quite an enjoyable story!

“There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.”

Glad I finally got to read this Christmas classic.
