Where do I even begin with this book? An incredible story with nuanced bi representation that had me crying on the train in the end! So many twists and turns that were shocking but justified themselves in the narrative. Evelyn Hugo is such a complex character that I'm with Monique on her in the end (which also felt like it was done just right). Paced really well, emotional, and kinda gripping, I really enjoyed it (after I switched to the audiobook bc the print size is unfathomably small?). Excited to read more TJR!

taylor jenkins reid is without a doubt one of my favorite fiction authors. she has such a striking ability to seamlessly piece together a realistic world and intertwine that world and it’s characters into all of her novels. she also has a wonderful talent for pacing her novels.  i do believe malibu rising is her best (i have yet to read carrie soto though!), but this was a great read as well. i loved evelyn, as well as celia, harry, and john. but, i honestly did not care for monique. when looking at the bigger picture, i understand that monique was essential to the story, but i will not lie and say i was not bored when reading her chapters. i just could not find it in me to care much about her, even if that does sound harsh.
Spoileri was NOT expecting the insane plot twist with monique’s father. like OH MY GOD? with harry of all people! taylor you’re crazy for that one.

It took me months to get through the first half of this book simply because I kept if getting so busy I forgot to read it and then I flew through the second half in 3 hours, leaving me here, now, at 1:32 am writing this review. This book was a lot. I enjoyed it and got entirely lost in it, but I think it didn’t know quite what it was. I think I found the foreshadowing a bit too heavy handed with a bit too little payoff. I don’t think the end is quite as shocking or as impactful as it wants to be unfortunately. More than anything, though, this book reminded me of the power of queer family (and not just family that has a gay couple, but true, queer family that pushes against nuclearity and all the promise of a white picket fence and 2.5 kids). Queer family to me was the hero of this novel.

I didn't think I was going to like this at first - not really any fault of the writing, but it's very different from my usual genres and I found it a bit too straightforward and (at times) tell-not-show-y. But as soon as it switched to Evelyn's POV I was enraptured. I cried a whole bunch of times, fell in love with most of the characters, and I will be telling everyone I know to read this.
