goes from a kind of Elmore Leonard-isch goof about a fake grocery store robbery involving Mafia gunrunning to a hazier, heavier cold-case mystery about two murdered lovers from 50 years before whose mummified remains are found in the course of the first investigation. Riffing on the seven sleepers of Ephesus/collated lore to say a few things about memory/war/trauma, through the guise of a hungry, non-threateningly horny Inspector Montalbano who has achieved Extremely My Shit status in short order

Much more than a crime book, the second chapter of Montalbano saga will make you fall in love with the inspector. The other characters are still to be discovered but they already look familiar and enjoyable. Livia is actually quite an annoying character, but I guess that's why Montalbano is so in love with her, she is the opposite of him. She is everything he cannot be.

I really didn't enjoy this book as much as the first Montalbano novel. Not sure whether it was the pacing or just the case he was investigating. There's one point where he tells the old couple that he is not interested in pursuing the murderer of the lovers in the Crasto....and that was how I felt, I just wasn't interested in continuing. Nonetheless, I tried to finish it but when another book arrived, I put this one down. I would still consider picking up another Montalbano mystery, perhaps I just won't read them all or in order.
