Came across this book from a manga I was reading. It’s a cute little story about a “finely dressed little boy” who gave away his beautiful clothes to three tigers so that they won’t eat him. The tigers ended up competing with each other to see who’s the “grandest of the jungle”, and they turned into a puddle of ghee. The ghee was then used to make yummy pancakes 🥞

The version I read was published by Saalfield in 1942, and it is currently available on Project Gutenberg. Story itself is fine (though I would refrain from using the word “black” in their names) but the illustration is not culturally accurate!

Aaaand that’s all there is to it 😊 If you’re concerned with racism just get the newer version. I mean tigers 🐅 turning into melted butter 🧈- isn’t that the coolest and cutest thing one can think of?!

Not sure how to rate this. Loved it as a kid - but seeing it through an adult's eyes makes me realize how racist it is/was. No rating given.

I bought this book some time ago as it was rumoured that it was going out of print due to some people thinking it is politically incorrect. Today i read it with one of my pupils. She liked it very much.
I find the story sweet. Glad i bought it.

It’s unfortunate that this was a childhood staple because it is so so so racist.

I seem to remember the version I read as a kid was one of those editions with the horribly racist illustrations. A book that you may want to look at before showing it to children.
