2.5 stars. While I thoroughly loved We Have Always Lived in the Castle, I was less enchanted by The Haunting of Hill House. I did enjoy reading more of Shirley Jackson's quirky and off-beat prose, but the rise and fall of the story just didn't work for me this time around.

All killer, no filler; there's not a single word that goes to waste here, everything Jackson does is at the service of the greater mood and psychology of the characters, which is detailed and empathetic without being overbearing.

Its a different kind of terror. It's great and very light and deep at the same time. You need to be very open to truly understand the big picture!
