WOW. Sie hat mich echt wieder erwischt.

***

I just love how Karin Slaugher tells her stories, how she writes her characters (they are all layered, rarely likable but I always root for them and they always sneak their way into my heart.)

The story itself was rough, the storyline in the past and what happened to Charlie and Sam. But also the present storyline. Please check the trigger warnings, cause if you have never read a Karin Slaughter book before, she doesn't hold back and tackles some serious themes.

The twists and turns, the revelations especially towards the end of the book.
WOW. She really got me again.

Best crime thriller I’ve ever read, the pacing is perfect and Karin Slaughter writes the best characters, always get through her books in a day because I can’t put them down. Would recommend anything she’s written.

VERY hard to read, not because it was difficult, but because it was so dark. If you want to read a book that makes you hate cis-men and small southern towns, I have the one for you. It's GRAPHIC and violent, and relentless.

It's a good story, though.

My only other complaint is how wordy Slaughter tends to be. She describes everything in such detail and it feels unnecessary. Describing every movement taken to check an email on a phone is too much. This book could've used a good culling of extra prose.

A defense attorney who is infamously known for defending some of the worst offenders in the town. One such case comes back to haunt him and his family will pay the price. Current day, he plans to a girl who shoots a teacher and student at school, but things aren't always what they seem.

My first book that's not part of a series. It is graphic, horrific, and violent, as most thrillers by KS tend to be. She's excellent when it comes to writing about violence against woman and terrible cops. Her books are not for the faint, but they always payoff in the end. I listened to the audio and it is 18 hrs long. You get to listen to the retelling of the same horrific events twice, the first telling and then what really happened in full graphic detail. My only complaint was that it was so long. Overall its a really good book.
