Loved getting to know Talanah more. I'll take pretty much anything I can get my hands on that expands this universe.

Didn't love it. I have played a lot of Horizon Zero Dawn, and this comic just felt like one of its side quests. I would have only given it 2 stars were I not already familiar with the game - there wasn't much background info to help newcomers to the franchise understand things (such as information on different types of weapons, or that "shards" means money). I liked seeing the new machines though! I will definitely read the other Horizon Zero Dawn comic miniseries as well.

Sometimes with Comics I wait until a few of them are out in volume collections to finally read them. This volume one focuses on Talanah, one of Aloy’s companions from the first game. Sometimes graphic novels of video game don’t tie into the bigger story or are filled with conflictions of the source material. Off the bat I love that these comics are focused, they are a lead up to the sequel video game. They are written by the team that works on the actual game.

Now finishing the sequel video game Forbidden West, I can say it ties in! And the character you meet in this volume is introduced and acknowledged in the sequel game.

These are excellent companion pieces to getting more backstory on the other characters of the Horizon’s world especially that the games focus on Aloy herself. These comics give others time to shine.

Recommended for fans. It does sort of work stand-alone and has recap pages and tons of expositions for those who don’t know or need a refresher but I wouldn’t recommend as a jumping point. Those who only beat the first game will have fun reading these before they jump into part two though.
