Quinn Says Goodbye by Christie Thomas is a book for young children about both helping others and loss. I recommend this book for children that have experienced any kind of loss, whether that is a pet, a family member, a friend or a toy. The illustrations are beautiful and really add to the story.

Perfect for young kids! We all experience loss at some point, but for children, it can be especially hard. Quinn Says Goodbye helps parents navigate big, sad feelings with their children through the story of Quinn as well as great conversation starters in the back of the book.

The illustrations are beautiful and I like the fact it’s trying to deal with grief and loss, but didn’t like its approach or handling of it at all.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion

Quinn is a baby owl and she finds an injured firefly and helps to take care of it. Quinn even names the firefly Blink. One day Blink is gone and Quinn is devastated as she really loved Blink.

Quinn Says Goodbye is a good picture book that shows children that goodbyes (and grief) happen and it is ok to be sad about the loss. Quinn Says Goodbye has a religious context to it and shows faith and even though God may let bad things happen, He will always be with us and take care of us.

This picture book can definitely help younger children deal with grief in a comforting way no matter the loss, and this story has a sweet ending. Whether the loss is a family pet, family member, a favorite toy, or even a move, this story will help children positively.

There is also a “Did You Know” section about fireflies, so children can learn about them. There are also Bible verses mentioned to help enhance the story and open up a discussion with your child and their grief if needed.

I loved the illustrations! The colors have a peaceful and calming effect to them as you read the story. I adored the owls and was excited to find out that there is another Quinn book which is already out: Quinn's Promise Rock: No Matter Where, God Is Always There.

Special thanks to the publisher, Harvest House Publishers, for granting me an e-arc copy via NetGalley. It was a pleasure to read and review.

Quinn Says Goodbye is a beautifully illustrated children's book that deals with loss and grief. Quinn, a little owl, befriends an injured firefly and helps nurture it back to health. But one day, the firefly stops visiting Quinn and she doesn't understand why. Quinn's mother tries to explain to her that sometimes you lose the people you love, but God will always be there for you.

I did think the message was a nice one, especially for families who want to start guiding their children in a spiritual or religious manner. The book, though, doesn't necessarily deal with loss or grief in a way that I think would really make sense to young children. Quinn never does discover what happened to her firefly friend. Did he die? Did he just stop coming around? I assumed death was implied, but young children may have an even harder time digesting that and dealing with it. They may question why Quinn's friend had to "leave" and why God would take her friend away.

I did enjoy this book, although I do think older children may handle it a little better. But if parents are willing to open a conversation with their younger children about death, loss, grief, and God, this book could be a good way to start something like that.

I'm giving Quinn Says Goodbye 3 stars.

A delightful children's story addressing the difficult topic of loss. Quinn, a curious young owl, befriends an injured firefly and helps nurture it back to full health. When the firefly eventually feels well enough to fly away, Quinn is devasted at the loss of her new friend and doesn't understand why God has allowed this to happen. Author Christie Thomas includes thoughtful notes for parents, firefly facts, and conversation starters to accompany this beautifully illustrated book.
