Extremely well written from a perspective of someone with almost no theological background but who loves seeing characters be torn asunder and be ruined by what they thought they loved…and what might be their salvation.

Baldwin’s writing, once again, breaks down the characters to a level which you cannot help but be engrossed in; they’re interesting and compelling, if nothing else.

Would not recommend as a first novel of Baldwin’s to enter into, but if you’re looking for gorgeous, rigorous writing, this could be the one for you.

On a final note, dedicating the book to his Mother and Father after all that is diabolical :)

A very intense read for someone who was never a part of a christian church community. Suprised me by the end when I got to tie all loose strings together but a bit weary in the middle with all the religious prattling

This was a struggle for me but not for the reason you think. It's a story about a boy called John and the people around him, and it's a hard story and a painful story. My issue - and this is a personal issue - is that I don't have it in me to appreciate the heavy and significant religious imagery. But that's me.
