I wish I'd had this as a teenager. Better late than never I suppose!

Kind of reads like I'm being treated with kid gloves. Admittedly I'm older than the assumed target audience, but it's not like teenagers are known to be thrilled at being talked down to. This will be considered a "hot take" but if anything there could have been less disclaimers about how, say, doing drugs is really, really bad, when talking about how doing drugs is better than suicide. Like, at a certain point, having even the people telling you "do drugs if you gotta" repeating how Drugs Are Bad just makes you want to do drugs out of spite.

Still loads more useful than therapy.

Oh hey, this book saved my life again. Thanks, Auntie Kate.

(This was at least my 6th or 7th time reading it, but I don't remember the dates so can't record them for tracking purposes.)

cw: frank discussion of suicidality, harm reduction methods of suicide prevention (including self-injury, substance use, eating disorder behavior, etc. with ample discussion of the risks in doing so), mentions of various forms of trauma (including religious, parental, queer/transantagonist, psychiatric).

I have pretty mixed feelings about this book. It helped me a bit but there are a few suggestions in the list that would make me hesitate to recommend it freely. I suppose if you're really on the edge of suicide, any of these alternatives really are preferable. But if you're not extremely serious, some of these suggestions could make things worse instead of better.
