There are so many passages in this book that are truly heartfelt, bizarre, and/or funny. But I did find that it took a long time for the story to pick up. Often times, I felt like the absurdity got monotonous because the story wasn't really going anywhere for a long time. As an OG listener to the podcast, there's a lot of fun in exploring more of Night Vale. While it isn't necessary to have listened to any of the podcast in order to understand this book, I would recommend 1 or 2 episodes in order to get your bearings as some characters and storylines are mentioned in passing and are definitely more effectual if you have a baseline understanding of who they are in the series.

Real rating: 4.5 stars!

This book is just so completely and utterly Night Vale, I had a blast reading it. There's something about reading it that just makes the juxtaposition of disturbing imagery immediately followed by a raw ass quote that hits you to your very core hit different.

I feel like you should have at least a little bit of context for Night Vale, but you definitely don't have to be caught up with the podcast to read it.

I just loved how off the wall and quirky this was. I hadn’t listened to the podcast, but now I definitely want to see where they went with these wild characters and storylines.

A challenging read. Some wonderfully funny non-sequiturs as per the podcast, some deep personal stuff, the secrets of much complexity revealed. The translation of throwaway comments into longer prose passages did not always work for me, but there you go.
