Definitely an interesting read that could very well be an ingenious allegory for some ethics that I’m too dense to understand after just one read. I like that it showed a more realistic interpretation of an interplanetary colony (read: not as utopian or fantastical as Star Trek etc) and Butler’s afterword was definitely helpful in understanding the thought process behind what I had just read. I’m torn between thinking that the story is too short because I want more exploration of this society; and thinking that it’s the perfect length because it gives us just enough information to work with while leaving us wanting more.

Read for climate apocalypse compariative lit class. Short story, really loved this one. There's a really cool discussion of the merging of gender dynamics via male pregnancy, and I like the body horror that accompanies it; although it is framed as horror, most of the descriptions of alien pregnancy are not far removed from normal human pregnancy. It raises questions of the role of the body and motherhood as something alien and threatening - a loss of autonomy as something else takes your body for it's own gain.
