"For Beatrice - Dead women tell no tales. Sad men write them down."

I felt like the vibe of this book was much different compared to the rest of the series so far. It had a strange feeling about it. Like something big and important was going to happen, yet I didn't feel like anything did. I feel like this book was simply dragged on, and despite answering a few questions, at least I think it did, it wasn't that good. I was bored and disappointed with it, which is a shame. Although that as what Snicket wanted, for the reader to be bored enough to fall asleep (which is something I kept coming close to) so that might be a good thing?

I didn't particularly care for any of the books in this series - each one was almost exactly the same. However, I did like the cover of this book.

The last few books had felt a bit slower, less engaging in the series, but this one pulled me in again and I was reminded how I love this series.

Lots of plot movement in this installment of the series, from searching for the sugar bowl to messages sent to the mysterious J.S. as well as further information about the V.F.D. schism straight from one of Count Olaf's henchmen. It was interesting to revisit this after completing the All the Wrong Questions prequel series, as the Bombinating Beast makes a couple of brief appearances here in the shape of a question mark on sonar and appears to be recognized by Olaf, who clearly fears it. There is also an interesting discussion about whether anyone is entirely all evil and how there may be fewer differences between the Baudelaires and Count Olaf than they realize.
