Mira's Last Dance by Lois McMaster Bujold

I find Bujold so comforting. There's a lot of common elements between Penric/Nikys and Miles/Ekaterin, but Penric is much more likable and compelling for me (if only because he has far more empathy and he is considerate of others), and even though a lot of the plot here is sold as a romp, the details sell it - Nikys's emotional fragility, Mira's ethical rules, the concern Des has for the woman with cancer, Penric's trauma from the time he worked with patients. It comes alive on the page, and I am happy to have the next novella available.

Men use to think they were falling in love with me all the time, most of the time they were just in love with their own cocks

This was hilarious and the best one in the series so far

A satisfying small dose of Bujold's World of the Five Gods, if you've read the prior Penric and Desdemona novellas. This story feels rich, but I suspect that this significantly because it dips into the rich world-building that is done in the prior novellas and in the World of the Five Gods novels. I fell in love with this world starting with *The Curse of Chalion* and it has not lost appeal for me.

Mira's Last Dance serves as a very short addendum to the previous Penric story, Penric's Mission - and so far out of all the novellas is the lightest, fluffiest, and one that's just mostly... there. It's a cute idea, since Penric's demon is made up of the lives of 10 women, to thrust him into an extremely female role, but... the whole of the idea is basically "What if cross-dressing!?!" Fun, but nothing more than that.

I really like Penric and his demon. This is a great series.

Most enjoyable, though you probably need to read the other Penric stories first. I loved Mira's role in the story. Looking forward to more!

The shortest Penric installment to date. I think I'd have enjoyed it more if it were longer. The character development is great, but the plot does not really go anywhere. I'm definitely looking forward to more, though.
