Another good read by this author. She keeps you guessing right up to the end with a twist I didn't see coming. Reads very fast.

I read a lot of reviews where people were shocked by the big reveal toward the end and I myself had figured it out about halfway through. It was still a really great read. I only give it a 4/5 because it was REALLY hard to keep track of all of the characters. I'm horrible with names and that doesn't help.

This book was better than the "Husbands Secret". As said by another reviewer " it just sucks you in". At first I thought the story was curious but all over the place and then it just melded together perfectly. Great writing.

Waar Liane Moriarty vooral erg goed in slaagt in Grote kleine leugens is om de snijdende sfeer tussen de moeders neer te zetten, die bestaat uit geroddel en competitie. Later in het boek komt daar ook steeds duidelijker nog een tweede laag bij, namelijk rond seksueel misbruik en huiselijk geweld, waarbij ik denk dat het extreem duidelijk wordt hoe vrouwen terecht kunnen komen in vicieuze cirkels van schuldgevoel etc.

Naast dat het goede karakter/sfeerschetsen bevat, leest het boek ook gewoon heerlijk weg, al voelt de opbouw ietwat gemakzuchtig en fragmentarisch aan door de lezer in ieder hoofdstuk een paar nieuwe zinnetjes van het politie-verhoor te voeren. Wel moet ik eerlijk toegeven dat het werkt, want ik was elke keer toch weer een paar hoofdstukjes verder of langer aan het lezen dan eigenlijk mijn intentie was. Al is dat natuurlijk ook te danken aan de korte lengte van de desbetreffende hoofdstukken die regelmatig maar een bladzijde of vier (in mijn gekozen Kobo lettertype dan) telden.

Hoewel de opbouw dus misschien wat gemakzuchtig is wat betreft het oproepen van spanning moet ik wel zeggen dat hoe alles bij elkaar kwam (en ook een paar eerdere twists) me wel wist te verbazen zonder dat het vergezocht of geforceerd aanvoelde.

Ik weet niet of ik direct meer zal lezen van Moriarty, daarvoor maakt het toch net wat te weinig indruk, maar in tegenstelling tot de meeste boeken waarin een moord centraal staat, was ik werkelijk geboeid vanaf pagina 1 tot het einde.
