This book reminded me of another book I read this year called Bound in Flesh: An Anthology of Trans Body Horror but I felt like lacked some of the depth of those stories and a clear why to the ending.

This book had some clear themes around what it’s like to transition, the difficulties of trying to pass, impossible beauty standards, and the expectations of loved ones when how they perceive you has to change.

However, the ending to me seemed really unclear and a bit wishy washy. I guess being horror it didn’t need a clear reasoning for the choices of the villains but that was what I was looking for personally so I was disappointed. I did like Isa’s story arc in learning to adapt but even that fell a bit flat.

What in the world did I just read? This felt like a fever dream, and not a good kind. The more I think about it, the more I hate it. I don't know how to rate it. It reads almost childlishly? Maybe it intended to not take itself seriously, but I didn't like it. It just became so ridiculous towards the end. Wildly bizarre.

I had a lot of fun with this one. Buckets of body horror, a plucky protagonist you want to root for, and an absolutely bonkers final showdown. Books in this series are supposed to capture the feel of 80s horror movies and this author definitely understood the assignment.

There was a little bit of weird language use around mental health (I mostly noticed this because the main character calls out fatphobia in the text and then immediately calls another character psychotic) and I wasn't a huge fan of the ending (I get why it went down that way but I wish it had ended like maybe 3 paragraphs earlier) but overall if you like your horror gooey and bizarre, I would recommend this one.

I took an unfortunate break from reading due to health reasons right at the end of this book, but when I was able to read again, it sucked me right back in. My only complaint would be about ebook formatting and some minor grammatical & spelling errors. Very much feels like an 80s horror movie gem of dysphoric body horror and trans political commentary put on page.
