Wasn't as good as Tom's book, didn't impact me as emotionally for some reason but it was great being with the gang and in this world nonetheless. I love that this book is all about fate and while I didn't necessarily fall in love with Jimmy and Rosie's story, I couldn't deny that all the signs were pointing at them being meant for each other.

Now if only Melina would write books for the gang from the Jellicoe Road.

Also just a million scenes of the Will and Frankie, Tom and Tara, Siobhan and Justine, Jimmy and Rosie all spending time together and just seeing the mundane life stuff because it's what I love most about her books.

Melina, why do you always have to remind me that life is so hard?? It's okay tho cos I always feel this undeniable hope at the end of your novels, and yet again that is what happened. I gotta stop reading you in front of others tho, people are probably worried about the girl sobbing on the train at 8:30pm at night.

A Surprisingly Disappointing Read

For someone who has a talent at making broken and angry people lovable it does not come through in this book. Neither Rosie nor Martha became lovable by halfway through the book. Actually it was at 61% that I felt anything for either of them. By this time, I was in absolute love with Taylor Markham and believed that Tom Mackee deserved the world.

What made the past two books in the “series” work was the group of friends and their changing dynamic and support. The Rosie and Martha chapters are frustrating and not pulled off with the same care as Georgie because they have practically nothing do with Jimmy as opposed to Georgie whose own story affected by and entwined with Tom’s.

I feel the this probably would have been better as a short story.
Or maybe it would be better if it wasn’t part of the Saving Francesca series because it really had practically none of those characters in it in any meaningful way—only cheap callbacks

There are some good moments. But there are also all of these magic coincidences and deus ex machina that don’t work in this story like they did for Jellicoe Road.

Let’s pretend that Saving Francesca and the Piper’s Son form a duology because this book is not it.

hear me out : Jimmy Hailer has a good day
... and he did.

Why I'm giving [b:The Place on Dalhousie|37592173|The Place on Dalhousie|Melina Marchetta|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1539689821l/37592173._SY75_.jpg|59200956] 5 stars, except the obvious (splendid charactrization, there's Tommy Mackee in it, strong women FTW, my god everything rings so true) : I only read 15 minutes of it a day (yes I'm evil) (alright, it was part of a reading project with my students) and Marchetta managed to draw me in EVERY TIME. For someone like me who struggles with attention a LOT???? it's pretty fucking fantastic.

My gang. 8 years. MY GANGGGGGG. Marchetta always knows how to make me tear up. Lotsa tears in lotsa chapters and even more laughs. This took me back to 2006 when I first met Frankie and her friends. And now they’ve all grown to so much more. The mems, nostalgia, reminiscing. Family, friendship, love and new beginnings. Other than Frankie, Jimmy’s always been my fav so I’m happy we got his story. And heaps more too. I’m happy and sad and content and satisfied and a little bit heartbroken this is over.
Loved the snippets of Sydney - Central platform 23, Chinatown/trams, inner west vibes, OATLEY GOT A MENTION, Jacksons on George (omg takes me back to my internship days), CQ... SAHHHH GOOD.

A lovely story by another great Australian writer. Something different for me but full of emotions. Friendship , family , love and life.

Melina Marchetta is truly a master. I wish I remembered more from Saving Francesca and The Piper's Son. It felt like I was meeting entirely new characters instead of revisiting old friends.

I'm glad that the characters were growing up alongside me (well, a little ahead of me). Marchetta is masterful as always.

Also, I totally cried on a plane from this book.

'Jimmy feels tenderness beyond anything. He's never used that word in his head to describe the longing for anyone in his life.'

THIS WAS EVERYTHING AND MORE. This is it, this is the Jimmy book we've been waiting for and it is so worth the wait. Definitely more of a slow build-up this time around, but I cried so many times it's not even funny. You don't ever think you'll cry over a fictional fucking car but then Melina 'Hold my beer' Marchetta happens

I like how Rosie is the more practical one and Jimmy can be a crybaby and how they just fit together so well like
Spoilerthey didn't even need to declare their love for each other and then just decide to get married, fucking legends. And I really appreciated both of them coming undone by the kindness of others and placing the level of importance they do on kindness
. Martha and Eugenia were great additions and Toto, whose name I totally Googled how to pronounce after the toe-toe scene LOL, plus everyone instantly being smitten with him was to adorable to read about

So I definitely avoided continuing reading this book for a few days and then when I finally made myself read ahead, Chapter 3 happened and god, I was not prepared for all the feels. Basically, all the callbacks and references and cameos had me bawling and then part 3 fucking slayed me with feels. The best fucking
Spoilerreunion sausage sizzle (LOL) I could ever ask for
and then the ending is so fitting

Lastly, hilarious that Anabel used to have a crush on Luca but turns out that she's a lesbian. YOU GO, GIRL

'Frankie said the six of them were the loneliest people in the world until they became a group.' — AND WHAT A GLORIOUS FRIENDSHIP

'Fuuuck, it's Hailler in Year Eleven detention,' Mackee says.
'What did I say about swearing?'
— ASLKFKSHJFKD

'But you guys fall to pieces and don’t give us another thought.' — 🗣 FUCKING TRUTH, HA

'Mackee is looking unimpressed by the news.' — Still a big fucking mood when it comes to Will Trombal LOL

'Shit, yeah.' — Just, yeah

‘Nothing deep,' Tara says, giving Jimmy a hug. 'Just a personal joke from before we were going out.' — I FUCKING SOBBED, OKAY

IT'S FINALLY RELEASED, IS THIS REAL LIFE?!!!!!!
