Because I didn't choose to read this book and would never have picked it up (it is the 2018 LI Reads book), I think it would be very unfair to rate this. However, I will share my opinions below and my personal rating for it below.

Spaceman is a book that I didn't like, but that's solely based off of my own preferences. While I enjoyed and admired Massimino's drive and enthusiasm, I could only read about the screws of a shuttle for so long. Perhaps the only thing that I actually found interesting was the fact that I have to go to space to fully experience OK Computer.

My rating for this book would be a half star, but again, that would be unfair. Based off of the ratings, I would say that you shouldn't let my opinion on the book influence yours too much, because while it obviously wasn't my cup of tea, it's certainly someone else's!

Very shallow and badly written. Massimino seems like a nice guy and I'm sure he's a great professor and public figure but this doesn't come across in this book.

I loved this book! Mike Massimino gives you an inside look at how hard astronauts work. The physical and mental strength it requires is astonishing. To even get a chance at being an astronaut you need be a PhD, a pilot, scuba dive, be extremely physically fit, and be able to not go insane when you're stuck in a spaceship hundreds of miles above the earth. It made me love space and wish I'd known more about it sooner.

Mike Massimino has dreamt of becoming an astronaut since the day Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. Massimino grew up on Long Island, and attended both Columbia University and MIT. He took qualifying exams and was rejected twice by NASA, but he didn’t give up. On the final round of astronaut selection, he failed because of poor eyesight, but he didn’t stop there, either. He makes it to space and has the ride of his life. His memoir teaches us that when you persevere, anything is possible.

I had never heard of Mike Massimino until I got this book on clearance at Booksamillion. I am glad I decided to pick this up, because it was a very inspiring read. It was really awesome to see a child grow up to realize his dreams of being in space. Massimino worked on some really well known projects, and learning more about the Hubble Telescope was really neat. I remember that being a really big deal when I was in school. I highly recommend this book for fellow space lovers.
