THE PLOT TWIST THING IS HAPPENING AGAIN IN THIS BOOK. I'm so mad that one of my fav characters that didn't need to die is now dead. The epilogue is making me crazy because I need to read what happens next.

While I usually don’t like the “constant-travel-post-first-confrontation” that plagues the middle book of a fantasy series, this one wasn’t half bad. There were a couple of quests throughout the travel that made it semi-enjoyable and not just like an endless cat-and-mouse game between the protagonist and antagonist.
HOWEVER, man the dialogue in this book is at times… horrendous. Characters do and say things that make no sense and the scenes are so poorly fleshed out that 1) you can hardly picture what’s going on and 2) the scenes almost feel jump-cut together. The result is sometimes dizzying as characters bounce from emotion to emotion with little to no explanation in a single scene. By the end of the book, it made me want to start skimming the dialogue scenes just to get through them faster.

I guess I mostly enjoyed this book
Spoilers!!
Mare was really annoying when it came to Cal. One page she says she doesn’t want him touching her anymore then she says she’ll never forgive him for not comforting her at Shades funeral, then she wants to tell him she loves him. What???
Also how many more times is Mare going to refer to herself as “the lightning girl”? We get it
On page 301, Mare says this while talking about Jon
“‘I believe him.’ The words taste strange”
One page 323 Mare says this while talking about Jon again
“‘I believe him.’ The words feel so foreign in my mouth.”
This annoyed me a lot because it’s basically the same sentence.
I really like the storyline though even though I have a lot of problems with this book

I have done WAY TO LONG about finishing this book. I found it very hard to plough through, mainly because of the following reasons:
- I don't like the events that happen. Not a single one. I was sad most of the time I read it. Sad and confused.
- I don't like action/travelling in fantasy books. It is truly personal and maybe because I am not native in English, but whenever a book has lots of travelling and action in it, my brain just farts and doesn't care. I just really don't care for action and travelling. Ideally, I want the characters to stay put in preferably a castle and have long romantic conversations. Like what happened in the first book.
- The size of the book is WAY BIGGER than the first one which made it really hard to carry around.
- The characters were all very unlikable which resulted in me not caring a damn about them.
So yes, if there will be a third installment, I don't think I am going to read it. Such a shame

Mare has major main character syndome in this book. Everything revolves entirely around her. Her thoughts, her wants, her needs, her insecurities, her power, her, her, her. This is intensified because the book is written in first person from only Mare's perspective. To make it worse, she's not that interesting and all her shit is repetitive.
The pacing of the story is all out of whack, too. There will be pages and pages and chapters and chapters and so many details devoted to the characters training or travelling and then the action scene will be 1 or 2 pages and the details are vague.
The "love" aspects of this book are terrible.
The ending was so, so, so, so predictable.
I don't know if I'll finish the series.
