This was really fun! Of course it’s historical fiction and we will never really know what exactly Zelda experienced, but I love her. I identify closely with her struggles and loved walking through her whole life with her.

I went into this thinking I would hate it but I came out of it recommending it to everyone. It's a character and relationship study more than anything else so there's no gripping plot and instead you're just listening to the chronological story of her marriage to F. Scott Fitzgerald  As if Zelda was telling it as a story to say a grandchild. From a story perspective, Zelda as a character is so interesting and I really loved her and by the end I hated Scott so desperately.  Zelda is so self aware and she questions her own motives and justifications in the context of the 1920s and 30's which is just a really interesting look at women in the time period. 


So interesting, the narrator is fantastic, and even though there's no real plot, I was still enjoying every chapter because the writing style is so easy to sink into.

The alcoholism, cheating, and medical content are basically the entire last half of the book. I think by our standards we would say that Scott was abusive and manipulative but I don't think that in the time period he would have been labeled of that so I'm not sure if it's fair to put that warning in the tags?

The Fitzgeralds were messy people, and Fowler definitely captured some of that in her novel. I was expecting Fowler to take creative liberties with Zelda Fitzgerald’s life, especially since this isn’t an actual biography. There were so many opportunities to get imaginative, so I was surprised that she ended up taking a more conservative storytelling approach that really made this novel fall flat.

I was also surprised and disappointed that Fowler rushed through a critical period of Zelda Fitzgerald’s life, which was when she was admitted into a sanatorium. This was also the period when she wrote and published Save Me by the Waltz, which would have been interesting to explore.

This was a mediocre and somewhat forgettable book. I’m rather disappointed that it was nowhere near as complex and colorful as Zelda Fitzgerald’s life.

I really enjoyed and fell in love with these characters at the beginning, but boy did things change.
