I enjoy fiction based from historical events, and I feel the author did a good job of honoring the real context of this story and bringing this perhaps little known history to light. Though there was love and family/found family in this story that was lovely to read, I would not call this is a light read - it does deal with some heavy subjects

This book was part of a book club I'm in.  Definitely out of my comfort zone but I'm so glad I read it. I didn't know the history of the book but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Since it was set in the countryside of Kentucky the language was different than what I'm used to so it took me a minute to get used to. My favorite scenes were with Cussy and her patrons. Although not all had the same enthusiasm, you still saw the effect reading had in her community and how important it was. The difficulty she faced as a Blue with her father as well. She and Jackson warmed my heart. Overall I really enjoyed this book and its message!!

Ik kon het boek niet wegleggen en heb het om twee uur 's nachts uitgelezen na een twaalf uur lange leessessie.

Om in het na woord erachter te komen dat dit niet lochte fantasie is, maar dat er echt blauwe mensen in die regio hebben geleefd is wel een beetje een mindfuck. Ik weet niet of ik het daar beter of minder goed door vind.
