Somehow this delightful book escaped my notice until it turned up in a street library one day. It’s always fun to see a beloved author trying out some new ideas, and there’s some interesting parallel universe stuff going on here, but quite different to what he explored in the Long Earth series. This is much more about relationships, culture, survival and community, with a bit of world building thrown in.

Despite at first feeling cynical towards the capacity of this story to be a "good" (unproblematic) one, by the time I'd finished it I felt it was cleverly executed and aware of its own limitations. The two main characters are immensely lovable and the narration easily straddles the line of satire and sincerity.

Absolutely incredible.

There's no way I can talk about this book coherently right now (or maybe ever) but it's one that's going to stay with me for a long, long time. Wow.
