I picked this up out of curiosity - I've not seen the film, and after reading it, I'm not likely to, but I thought I might see it and I love book/film comparisions, plus a friend told me it was a good read. But I did not enjoy this one at all. There's a lot of reviews/hype/comments about how it's very Catcher-In-The-Rye-esque, and a lot of further comments about how that over sells it and isn't true and what have you, but I actually think that's quite a fair description - it is a very coming-of-age, precocious teenage boy thinking he knows it all but maybe he doesn't kind of story. It's just, I didn't like Catcher In The Rye either! Am I missing something with this particular sub-genre? Is it a boy thing? A teenage thing? Both protagonists in these stories irritated the heck out of me, self absorbed and whiney - which led to a discussion of whether you have to like the protagonist or not to enjoy a book. I argued not, but you do still have to be able to empathise with aspects of their character, and the rest of the story has to hold up too. Unfortunately for Submarine, I did not, and it did not. A complete waste of my time.

funny lines but overall quite tedious to get through. one of the rare instances in which the film is superior.

I really enjoyed this book, a coming of age novel about a boy with a dark humour. I laughed at moments and appreciated the writing style. There are parts where he just seems pissed off at the stupidity of people or what he perceives to be stupid. At points this book made me cringe and smile but I suppose that’s how your teenage years are.

Really liked the first half, the second half felt really slow to me. Maybe I just lost interest. Oliver was really weird. I prefered the movie tbh
