This was my introduction to the War of the Roses as a teenager.  I find all of Stevenson's writing to be opaque and disappointing.  Kidnapped, Treasure Island and Jekyll & Hyde could all have been great in the hands of a "better" writer, in my humble opinion.  And Black Arrow likewise.

I thoroughly enjoyed the journey, but everything worked out too well for the protagonist, so many deus ex machina situations, and such a sturdy plot armour to boot.. but the adventure was fun and exciting, never a dull moment.

I had seen a very old black and white movie version before that I only moderately liked so I wasn't keen on the book at the beginning. However, the book is quite different from that movie and I really enjoyed it. I am kind of partial to stories were the girl has to dress up like a guy... it is the tomboy in me I suppose. :)

Set during the War of the Roses, The Black Arrow tells the tale of Richard Shelton. Raised as a ward of ambitious kinght Daniel Brackley, a chance encounter on the road sees him fall in love and learn the Brackley was behind his father's death. Joining outlaw gang the Black Arrows, Richard seeks his revenge and to free his love from Brackley's control. Over the course of the story he learns that his actions have consequences, as his decisions lead to deaths and lost livelihoods.

Typical RL Stevenson, worth the read for a children's adventure back in the day :-)

This book is an adventure story, but goes a little deeper, I think. I was surprised when the hero actually started to have to face with the consequences of his actions and develop a sense of personal responsibility! (You know, how in movies the hero can steal a car and it's all good because he's chasing the bad guy? Yeah, this hero didn't get off so easy, and I appreciated it.)

Only thing, the dialogue was rather stilted.
