Troubling Love by Elena Ferrante

an awful introduction to ferrante’s writing.

although the synopsis suggests that delia, the narrator, embarks on a voyage of discovery in search of the truth about her family, and the telephone calls lead her to compelling and disturbing revelations about her mother's final days, it is essentially untrue. she already knows everything there is to know about her family because she lived it, and she rather wishes to repel it and completely forget. and there isn’t really a thing she discovers about her mother’s death – she never talks to the person who her mother was mostly likely with during that fatal night, she only speculates and seems fine with whatever her brain comes up with at the very second.

jumpy and jittery. the descriptions and similes somewhat meaningless. so much vagueness. the author makes it seem like so much is happening when the main character barely does anything. all the events lead to nothing. nothing appears plausible. but you can count on the fact that you’ll be weirded out!

although i’ve seen elena ferrante denies she’s a man hiding under a female-sounding pseudonym, i wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case. the whole story reads like a very strange male perspective on what being a woman is like, and everything was weirdly sexualised for no real reason, just like with male authors.

I did love the My Brilliant Friend-series, but whatever I've read since I just heavily dislike.

Elena Ferrante's nightmarish and visceral debut novel already has traces of the characteristic violence and intensity with which she writes about womanhood.

Brutto, il peggiore letto della Ferrante. E li ho letti tutti.
Noioso, confusionario, 160 pagine che a stento sono riuscito a finire!

I never thought that I would have disliked a book so much. Slow, tedious, rather boring. I was so looking forward to receiving it and now I am scared of buying another book of this author.
