Supernatural scheming is how you get ahead in life. If it weren't for the killing of innocents, I'd have Elinor Caskey for my life coach. Her husband has a good enough head for business, but it is she who ensures that the Caskeys get through the Depression with a minimum of discomfort. She manipulates people and events so elegantly (and sometimes violently), that you can't help but admire her cunning. Elinor and Mary-Love have their long overdue showdown, and my goodness, what a finale.
The younger Caskeys are more prominently featured in this third part, and I have high hopes for both Miriam and Frances, waiting for the creepy gene to kick in. Who knows what they've inherited from their mother. I mean, I got migraine from mine, but that's still a lot better than some kind of ancient, scaly, reptile fuckery.
I like how gentle McDowell is with his characters. Everyone (except Carl) has some redeeming qualities. Queenie, or Drama-Queenie as I like to call her, started out as completely insufferable, but has turned out pretty decent. The gents, though easily manipulated, are good-natured, like big friendly floppy-eared dogs (not you, Carl) who just want everybody to get along. Even Elinor is careful to do the right thing (although her idea if the "right thing" may differ from, you know, everyone else's).
This is so much fun I'll just read the remaining three books all at once.
