Violent, dark, and intense, Tynion, Dell'edera, and Muerto continue their dark fantasy about growing up in a dangerous world with more intrigue, more action, and more monsters as the children come to terms with a hostile world they are not prepared for and the adults reckon with their inability to hold back forces they do not even understand.

So I tried the second volume, and it's a no for continuing for me. This is a very grim and very gritty Buffy the Vampire pastiche, where only children and members of "The Order" can see the horrible monsters causing mass death. But, unlike Buffy, there's much more awareness among the civilian population of what's going on (at least, in the locale where this story takes place), and "The Order" is much more focused on cover-ups than actual monster killing. Of course, our protagonist really knows what needs to be done (and that obviousness is more than a bit frustrating).

I think I might be able to get into this if the violence was just toned down, but this much atmosphere plus scenes of children ripped in two is not a combination I want to continue.

This might be the first graphic novel that I actually like the colorist's work more than the illustrator. Really looking forward to the next volume
