This is pretty good. I knew going in it was about a college girl getting recruited into a mysterious group and then murders would happen. I didn't expect it to be quite so much about her emotional journey, so it felt a little slow at times but overall I enjoyed it.

(3.5) Since I saw this book was about a cult, i wanted to read it. It was a fun read and something to distract me from the outside world, but at some point the writing felt lazy, with the pasing of the book being to slow and then out of nowhere it was too fast. It didn’t really solve many things that could make the book so much better and it left many interesting point of the book undeveloped. The characters felt two-dimensional and the plot was at times too predictable.

Honestly? I cannot tell you what I just read. It was intense and deep and mind hurting. This young girl wanted nothing but friends, and to experience the college experience away from home. She wanted her own life, and what did that get her? A fucking cult? Like who the literal hell uses Christianity to shape their own version of religion and convinces people to do their bidding just so they don’t burn in hell and have the promise of their version of afterlife? It was so sick and twisted how they messed with her mind, like literally brainwashed her into believe everything they said. This was manipulation at its finest, toxic mindset and truly psychologically thrilling. I hated it in the best way possible.

Favourite quote: ““They made me feel like I belonged, like my existence truly mattered. They made me feel loved. And for most of us, that’s enough.””

I've never read a more intriguing character study. To be honest, I was immediately fascinated by the concept; most people see 'cults' as something both otherworldly yet grounded. This book does away with that by demonstrating how it is so easy to fall into these people's grasp and how broken it leaves its victims. Reading the author's background and history only makes the story better. One of the best books I've read in my twenty years of life. Highly recommend. (I ended up binging it in a day).

I really enjoyed this read and I feel like I really felt like Emily did while she was experiencing all the events in the book. I wish it had a little more closure on some things, but I also feel like it was left a little vague on purpose. However there were some things I wished were explaining more or given more closure on. I also felt like the ending was a little rushed compared to the rest of the book.

i’m too annoyed to write a review right now, but this book is the reason i’m probably never picking up YA novels again
