Taming the Highland Bride

After caring for her drunken father and brothers, Merry Stewart is only too happy to learn that she will be traveling to England to marry her betrothed. Unfortunately, upon her arrival it seems that she has gone from the frying pan into the fire as her fiancé is as inebriated as her family. It soon turns out that Alex is not the drunken sot he appears and that someone if determined not only to cause strife between the married couple but to remove Alex from the equation altogether.

A sweet romance with likable characters. Alex is patient, loyal and understanding although for a supposedly seasoned warrior, he is constantly being knocked unconscious. Merry is charming and not nearly as shrewish as the title implies. She is also a resourceful woman and manages to save Alex more often than not. On a side note, the wedding night scene is reminiscent of that in Amanda Quick’s Seduction but not as cleverly executed.

The mystery has potential but there are too many contrived situations and the villain is obvious. Moreover, Sands has an irritating tendency to set up a particular plot point and then have it drag on for a while before it is resolved.

In sum, a light and easy read but nothing all that special.

3 and a half stars - it was a fast paced, enjoyable book. I spent the first part wondering whether Alex was the horniest love interest I’d ever seen, which made sense as the story went on, though found he was also very one dimensional. I was glad he wasn’t a drunk and that the misconception was cleared up quickly, as im not a fan of misconception as a major plot point - but wish he had some kind of flaw to make him more interesting. To have the villain out for his head be working with someone from his past, or something like that. All the characters are a bit that way though; but it is a shortish book and a nice easy read so...I’m not that bothered that it’s lacking in plot

Hmmm I know this is historical, but I still prefer consent in my Romance. This had issues from both MCs that was hard to get passed. Even though there was a ‘conflict’ it felt like nothing happened. Most of the book took place over journeys. A lot didn’t work for me here but it was readable. I agree with another reviewer also that nothing was really described so it really didn’t have a great setting.

this was fun. not as good as the first in the series but still I'm not mad that I read it. the mystery wasn't that difficult to figure out I had kind of figured it out most of it really early on and when everything was revealed it wasn't all that satisfying.
I did like the couple though, but my favourite bits were when they travelled back to visit the couple from the first book :)
I think I'll wait a while until I read the next one in the series because I'm thinking that this one wasn't as enjoyable because I read them back to back and the authors formula was more obvious to me.

Kinda knew that

was going to be a our main villain but I didn't know exactly how until almost the end of the book. Wished that they spent more time with the Duncan clan and that wasn't such "on a journey" story.
Trigger Warnings: loss of parent(s), alcoholism, mention of war, blood, attempted murder, sexual assault, fire, drugging, and violence

3,5 stars.

The only reason why I am giving this less than 4 stars is that I was not happy with an ending. If you don't want to spoil this book before you read it, don't read the next sentence, because it completely spoils the book.
SpoilerHero kills a sixteen-year-old boy (who was blackmailed to kill him) because the boy doesn't want to live the rest of his life in dungeons and embarrass the family name. Now, I understand that, but still...It was the aunt who was the main cruel character here and blackmailed the boy into killing Alex.
