Lady PI in 1940s-ish Los Angeles type city (centered around moviemaking and glamour) that's much more heavily Chinese. I liked some of the world building, but the writing was clunky and there was one too many conversations where everyone except me knew what the hell they were talking about. Also: the smoking! Everyone smokes, all the time! Yes, it's supposed to show the "period," but I could have done with fewer references.

Crescent City, a reimagined Los Angeles of the 1930’s, has it all. Games of Chance, detectives, starlets, junkies, ghosts and one fearless private investigator named Lola Starke. Each part complements the others to create a delightfully dark and beautifully realized world you could step right into - though you’d have be tough as nails to survive it.

SG Wong has crafted an intriguing tale of blackmail, murder and subtle magic that threatens to see young Lola sleeping with the fishes. She has to swim hard against the current of enemies, both known and unknown, to untangle and uncover the secrets behind two difficult cases. Secrets worth killing for.

Time to start on the next one!
