Welcome back to Funiculi Funicula Café in Tokyo. A place which has been serving coffee for more than a hundred years. But this coffee shop is a little different, offering its customers the opportunity to travel back in time. The opportunity doesn't come without risks, and some rules, most notedly that they must return before the coffee gets cold.

In Before the Coffee Gets Told: Tales from the Café four new customers: a man who goes back to see his best friend; a song who was unable to attend his mother's funeral; a man who travels to see a girl he could not marry, and a detective who never gave his wife a certain gift.

💭 T H O U G H T S

In this second installment, I had the pleasure of being introduced to four new characters and their stories for wanting to travel in time. I was more prepared for the structure this time around, which helped me enjoy this one better than the first. Still overly repetitive, I felt like I connected a bit more with the characters and their individual vignettes.

A nice escape from reality, I'm looking forward to the upcoming release just to see where the author goes next. Because I love the concept so much, it's easy to put aside the less than stellar execution. And it's no surprise that I am a huge fan of books that make me reflect on what I would change if I could travel back in time.

I loved it. I think that the strongest message in the book is to live happily for yourself and your loved ones who are not here. Grief is a big part of this book but it is heartwarming at the same time.

The whole concept of the book is so cool and it’s really well written. This is my first magic realism book I believe so I’m ready to delve into more.

Liked this more than the first book! Loved the way they
Spoilergave Kazu more depth in this one.
I was afraid the sequel wasn’t going to be as good as the first and that the stories of the people who time-travelled in the second book wouldn’t be as compelling as those who did in the first. Glad I was proven wrong!

After being slightly disappointed by the first book of this series, I decided I wanted to give the second book a chance to redeem itself and it indeed did.
I really enjoyed this one compared to the first one because I find the characters much more fleshed out in this book. There are also multiple references to the previous book and I think this second book tied the whole story together in a beautiful way. Everyone we meet has a relationship with another character and I really enjoyed reading about all their entanglements.

Unlike the first book, I found this one much more endearing with stories that center around regret. This common theme made this book far more coherent and feel much more polished than the previous book. And so, as someone who has read both of them in the correct order, I do suggest following the timeline and not skipping ahead because, otherwise, I think reading the second book first will create confusion and take out from the experience.

The stories are heartwarming and very happy, so happy endings are to be expected. Even so, I felt like the message was a little cheesy at times, but you know what? This is a happy book, so no real complaints here.

This is what I expected from the first book, but at least this second one delivered. I thoroughly enjoyed this quick read and was glad to realize that the shortcomings of the first one were fixed in this one.
