This book is not in a genre I typically read but I found myself fascinated by the strategy, politics and epic battle scenes.

The Anakim are a long lived war like people, the Sutherners are shorter lived and more artistic but they decide to pick a fight with the Anakim one day. Roper is young and this is his first battle but when his father dies on the field he becomes the new Black Lord and he calls the first retreat in Anakim history. Roper then spends the rest of the book trying to win back the esteem of his subjects for that and a couple other bad calls.
I liked the characters in here and I also liked that while it's a war story the battles aren't overly described causing the pace of the story to remain consistent and interesting.

Not GoT, if you go into it expecting GoT you’ll probably be disappointed. Still very good, fast paced

I really enjoyed this one. The writing style is totally my jam. The prose, excellent! This book gave me a lot of what I need to stay interested in a novel, even though it was quite character driven. Lots of action, political intrigue, and relationships to root for. I'm very happy I picked this up and am eager to continue.

I really enjoyed reading this book, but there were some aspects that held it back from receiving a 4/5 star review from me.
Starting with the positive aspects, the fight scenes and action during the battle had me at the edge of my seat, and really allowed myself to feel immersed in the brawls between the Anakim and the Sutherners. The political warfare between Roper and Uvoren over the throne also added to the battle with Roper battling two fronts. The last 100 pages of the book had my attention the whole time, and the pacing, action, interactions were AMAZING!
However, as many of the other reviews have stated the book possessed potential and had so much more to offer. The characters developed, yet I felt no connected and felt mechanical and unrealistic. The beginning and middle parts of the book also felt slow and draggy which made me put down the book many times as I felt like continuing to read was tedious. The last qualm I have was the ending of the last battle which I won’t go into detail was unexpected but convenient.
I recommend this book despite my critiques, and I hope to go into the second book of this series with higher hopes as the author has gotten his debut jitters out

This is the best I’ve found at fulfilling my desire of Lord of the Rings/Game of Thrones type complex storytelling. An imaginative world that takes a minute to wrap your head around so much unfamiliarity while have exquisite character development, politics, strategy, and societal exploration. It’s not the right book for everyone but it found a big fan with me. The writing of the battle scenes especially are especially fantastic.

It kind of throws you straight into the conflict, then explains everything later. Besides that issue, I loved this book, and can't wait to read the next one and continue Roper's story.
