Beautiful writing but the cis desire to not recognize a trans child when she tells you who she is is making this a difficult read at this point in my own transition. I'd rather read other trans people.
Might return to when I'm less upsettable lol

Besides the slow pace and occasional circular writing, this book melted my heart. Hays has the power to shift perspectives into light on trans issues in personal, historical, and scientific manners. Thank you, Hays, for providing a powerful resource to those uneducated on trans perspectives by providing your own experience on it through motherhood. I wish you and your daughter, along with the rest of your family, friends, and community, the absolute best in life.
A support system goes a long way, and the statistics on how trans lives end was heartbreaking to discover. Far too young, abundant, and violent ends. The tone can feel "preachy" at times to which I would argue, it is appropriate for the climate that trans youth and mothers face.
How silly of us to limit ourselves to five senses, when Hays rightfully argues that we have more to us. We have a sense of self as much as we have a sense of gravity that grounds us in our body in relationship to the land, oceans, and sky (166).

it's what it says on the tin, a letter from a mother to her trans daughter, trying to explain her perspective of navigating the world for your child when you don't know what it's like to be trans. Beautifully written.
