i’m in two minds about this… on one hand this book has made me confront myself in uncomfortable but eye opening ways, something few books have been able to achieve. like the protagonist of My Face For the World to See, i’m guilty of creating narratives in my head about others and myself - to me it seems like this is done to maintain a sense of control over your life. but when one is forced to confront themselves through the gaze of the other (e.g. when the girl tells the protagonist that he screams and cries in his sleep, a revelation that sends him into shock), or when reality doesn’t follow the script you think it was supposed to, it upends your perspective and forces you to look beyond the mask you’ve created. so for that reason i will be thinking about this book for a long time.
on the other hand, i did feel like this book draggeddd. it felt much longer than 137 pages and at times (especially in the middle) it was a bit of a slog to get through. but maybe i wasn’t quite in the right mindset for this.

Beautifully written, almost makes up for the thoroughly unsympathetic protagonists.
