A compelling read

When your whole world is a lie there is only one thing to do fight. Em spent her life trying to fit in and gain her powers. She can dream travel like the rest of her people but hasn't "earned" her individual power yet. She receives injections that are supposed to help. They don't and she soon learns the truth why they don't.
I enjoyed the friendship triangle and the way the author presented the characters background. Can't wait to see where this story goes and if love can find a way into it

In this book Em (a Defect a Dream Traveler with out powers) the lead character finds out harsh truths and secrects that her family and community leaders has been keeping from her and the others. Em also finds out Rogue the friend she thought dead is alive and well. Like her Lucidites this book has action and twists that I didn't see coming, Like Ren the man we love to hate and hate to love.

I received this audiobook from the author, and I had to admit that after starting listening to it, I just couldn't stop!!!

I'm not sure if it's the story, or the writing/narrating, or the characters, or all three of these factors together, that made me unable to even push the pause button, but I loved each and every element of this book nonetheless!

But, let me describe it all, one factor at a time!

The plot, really interesting and unique!
The phenomenally happy, clean and peaceful community of Austin Valley consists of Dream Travelers, where each person has a special ability!
But the small community isn't as unified as it used to be. More and more defects are being discovered as the years pass by!

The daughter of the President's right hand, Em Fuller, is one of those defects!
But, her natural curiosity and the sudden reveal that one of her old dear friends is still alive, after so many years of mourning him, will lead her to suspect that something bigger is behind everything!

But, exactly who and what is at fault, that question remains a mystery!
And, not only for the heroine!
We, the readers, are being thrown on one major plot twist after the other, with more huge reveals and fast building of sentiments for the main heroes.

I was left with my mouth hanging open far too many times, while also not being able to withhold myself from sharing the story, and every single discovery I was aware of, with practically anyone who would listen to me raving about this book!

I loved Em, and I loved Rogue, Zack and Nona!
To the point that I really loved them!

And, likewise, I hated deeply and with a passion all that tried to make Em's life difficult! (Sadly, I can't reveal who they are or rage about them, as I will be giving away major spoilers - yes, the ones that left me gaping at my walls - )

So many deep and contradicted feelings of love and hatred for the different characters, generated by this books!

If you really are looking for a book that will combine, adventure, romance, passion, scandals and secret communities, full of people with amazing abilities, then do not hesitate for a second and pick up this book!

All in all, 5 stars for a read that had it all! Amazing writing style and plot, amazing main and side characters, as well as some of the most evil ones I've ever encountered!

A little slow in the beginning because it opens with too many questions - but once you get a handle on what is going on, this book sucks you in and takes you on a wild journey. Definitely would recommend to anyone that enjoys dystopian fiction!

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Right now I am mentally giving this a 3.5 but I already want to re-read it because I think this series will grow on me. The book is a really slow burn but once all of the ground work is laid you become really immersed in the story and attached to the characters. This is actually the first book of Sarah Noffke's that I have read but she seems to have a knack for creating unique story lines. Definitely looking forward to book 2!

In the dystopian world of Reverians, the Middlings serve the Dream Travelers. Teenaged Em’s Dream Traveler talent hasn’t manifested as it should. At her father’s urging, she takes injections to augment her special gift. As months go by and she isn’t “cured,” Em feels like a broken, unproductive member of society. The tension and disapproval are even strong within her family.

Life is only tolerable for Em because of her friends.

But things aren’t as they seem for the Reverians. Em takes chances to learn the truth, and as each layer of societal lie is peeled away, terrible truths are revealed about people she’s known, loved, and trusted her entire life.

How far will a society go to rid itself of Defects?

I’m a Sarah Noffke fan. Her YA books grab me and won’t let go. I’ve now read works in her Reverian and Luccidite series and highly recommend them both.

Another wonderful story about the Dream Traveller race. I felt having read the Lucidites series first really helped my understand the Dream Travellers, although I'm sure the story would have been just as wonderful without it. In this story we learn about the Reverians, who live in an isolated area where the Middlings (humans) cater to their every want and need. Dream Travellers are supposed to have magical powers, but a group of Reverians, including Em, do not seem to have received their powers and are labelled Defects. It's safe to say all is not what is seems, and when Em finds out the truth there is hell to pay! A great beginning to the series with some kick ass characters such as Em, Zack and Rougue and Em's sister Nona and grandma Tutu.

This book was a nice surprise!! I thought the writing was very well done. I'm very character driven and Sarah Noffke is very generous with her characters. The world building was very good too. I think we're going to see even more of it in the next book (which I'm looking forward to reading).

This world is run by Reverians, they are people who posses gifts and the ability to dream travel. Sounds great, except that they are controlled and only allowed to dream travel on a schedule and are monitored. If they try to do it outside the rules they are severely punished. Then there are the Middlings, who do not have gifts or the ability to dream travel. They live in servitude to the Reverians. The President is the one controlling the society, and there are those Reverians who appear to not be developing their gifts when they reach the age, so they are classified as defects and have to receive a daily injection that they hope will cure them. Em, the main character, has been classed as one of those defects. Some of her family, her parents and older sister, treat her like they despise her and she is an embarrassment.

Em begins to question things. Then an old friend she thought was dead comes back and tells her enough to make her question more. Em is a strong, likable character. There were times I wished she would do things differently, but then I had to remember her perspective.

This was such a great read, and if it wasn't for the migraine I had for a couple of days I would have finished it sooner. I can't wait to read the next book "Rebel". I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes dystopian, fantasy and some romance too.

I received an ARC ebook in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, Sarah Noffke!

I am totally in love with the whole dream traveler idea. I really wish it was something I could do. I love to travel and wish I could do more; with dream travel I could explore the world for free!

Defects brought more of the dream traveling I found to love from the Lucidites series I previously read by Sarah Noffke. We didn't see a lot of it yet here in Defects due to the strict laws in effect in the city of Austin Valley where the main character, Em, lives. She is only allowed to dream travel one night a week and usually its for community meetings.

Em is considered a defect as her gift has not yet developed. Everyone who doesn't have has been getting a daily injection to help them develop their gift but everything is not as it seems in her structured, safe community.

Her world is flipped upside down when her friend from childhood, Rogue, who "died" a few years back shows up hiding in the clinic Em gets treated in and she sets on a mission to help him and find out what really is going on in her closed off town.

I love the fluidity of Sarah's writing and how she develops her characters. I love Em and Rogue together! I can't wait to see what tricks Tutu has up her sleeves and what will become of Nona. I was so surprised to see snarky Ren make a return too!
I'd can't say more for fear of giving too much away.

I loved this as much as the prior three dream traveler books and I can't wait to see what is in store for the next book in the Defects series.
