That sure was a book I read.

I found this compulsively readable but also so frustrating. I was trying to place myself in the time period, but even then I wanted to shake everyone in this story, yikes. I did very much appreciate all the time spent in Baba and Kate's interior lives, and I very much see a straight line from these to the Neapolitan novels, so that was fun.

A book (or books in this case) that I’d recommend to anyone, can’t believe I’d never read it before. KOB does not waste a word, balances comedy/pathos/romance with such ease in a very accessible 600 pages, constantly surprising you with a new style or tone amongst the trilogy (much like one of her literary idols in Joyce). Worth reading just for Baba on her own. The epilogue is maybe one surprise too many but with all that still delicately done.

I appreciated this book more for what it meant, than what it actually consisted of. I did definitely enjoy the three novels, but I enjoyed them more knowing that they caused such scandal when they were released. God forbid a woman be discontent once she’s married!
All in all, wholly recommend. A healthy dose of Irish feminism☘️
