This book follows a couple who are raising 4 chickens (a brood) and trying to have their own family. Raising chickens is a lot more work then anyone who doesn’t have them would realize. I think the author is writing in parallels between raising chickens and trying to have a family. It is an interesting story and well written. With chickens of my own, I found her chicken stories very relatable. When you look at it from the outside, it is very interesting how much worry is present for these helpless birds. You just don’t quite realize it when you live it day-to-day.

A quiet, intelligent, and insightful novel about a woman trying to keep a group of chickens alive while grieving a miscarriage. It's incredibly beautiful.

I so wanted to love this novel--because, chickens. But it was such a drag. There were insightful lines, but not enough to keep me interested. Tough to finish, but thankfully short.

3.5 ⭐️ a compelling story that reads smoothly & easily on the surface but tackles heavy, emotional topics underneath. A woman who has recently experienced a miscarriage, hides her grief by obsessing over the safety and care of her four chickens seemingly trying to convince herself that she is worthy and capable of caring for another living thing.
