Usually I’m not really a reader of horror or YA but picked this one up for a reading challenge and it felt milder than I expected of horror? There were some things I liked about this and some things I didn’t care much for (I appreciated the narrative structure added by the true crime podcast even tho I don’t really care for the medium itself). If I’d read this when I was still around the age of the characters I would probably really have enjoyed it and learned a lot from it!

Tiffany Jackson is absolutely brilliant. A Carrie retelling with race involved, perfection. Carrie is one of my all-time favorite Stephen King books, it's also the first one I ever read. I was a tad nervous going into a retelling of it, wondering if those same feelings could be captured. They absolutely were. I knew the end, but I was still on the edge of my seat the entire time. Jackson managed to write gruesome horror that had me wondering if Maddy really was justified in the end. She captured the perfect essence of Carrie and intensified the major themes of right vs wrong and the complexities. Every theme from the inspiration work was taken, intensified, and perfected. I will never shut up about this book now...
